A Ladies Reading Retreat – Room #32

At the end of the day the ladies reading retreat offers a respite from the days hurried pace.

My inspiration was a lovely “Bonne heure du jour” -- a ladies writing desk, which literally translates as “good hour of the day” in French. This desk was the impetus that sparked the ideas for transforming this simple little linen closet into a sumptuous ladies reading retreat. Unfortunately a traditional Bonne heure du jour is quite large so a petite French writing desk would have to suffice.  The room did not offer much space but with two walls of cabinetry original to the house, I was able to create unlimited space both functionally and decoratively by outfitting each nook individually.

In order to transform any small space into a room that offers all the creature comforts

Choose a color palette that is monochromatic

* By using the same color on walls and ceilings –horizon lines are erased and the space seems less confined

Add decorative moldings

* Simple crown and base molding are used to create the illusion of an 8” crown and give a nice shadow

Change hardware

* A change in decorative hardware can transform a room from simple to elegant

Use fabric to dress interiors of select cabinets

* Upholstering one closet in a soft blue velvet adds a bit of elegance and warmth

Think functionality

* Stock cabinets with books, storage boxes, pens, paper and other necessities
* Remove select doors to open the space

Create a special atmosphere

Indulge your senses

* Taste - champagne and chocolate?
* Touch - cuddle up with a silky throw
* Sight – fill the room with your favorite things
* Sound - Billy Holiday? Mozart?
* Smell - scented candles; fresh flowers

What better way to escape the day than to retreat to that special room that you’ve carved out for yourself?
